Kintsugi is the Japanese art and philosophy of repairing broken pottery with lacquer (urushi tree resin) and decorating it with gold. 金継ぎ literally means ‘gold joining’. Rather than concealing cracks, they are deliberately highlighted. In this way, each piece tells its own story.
Kintsugi also symbolises resilience, healing and the beauty of imperfection. It serves as a reminder that breaks and changes are part of life and make us unique. A beautiful metaphor for the fractures in our own lives.
In this workshop, we will repair and embellish broken pottery in a way inspired by kintsugi. Please bring along a small piece of pottery (Maximum dimensions: L15 × W15 × H15 cm) that you would like to repair and embellish. You can then use it as a decorative item. In this way, the object continues its story with us in a different way.
We will show you how it is done. If you do not have any ceramic items to repair, we can provide you with one.
We will provide guidance throughout the workshop. No prior experience is required. At the end of the workshop, you can take your artwork home with you.
Important: Repaired ceramic items must no longer be used for food, but only as decorative items.
WHAT DOES A WORKSHOP INCLUDE?
A 2-hour workshop includes all necessary materials, a ceramic item to repair (if you haven’t brought your own), instructions and one drink per person. Ages 14 and over.
Courses take place through online booking only.
For certain techniques, the choice may be limited by the very nature of the technique.
Our Terms and Conditions apply, as well as the following conditions: any participant who is absent forfeits their right to take part in the workshop and to use their equipment; no other participant may replace them or use their equipment in their place.
